HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Big Island residents can get pesticide training to help fight invasive little fire ants.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/24TgASI) the council is expected to direct more than $96,000 in grant funds next week ahead of the county’s launch of a pesticide voucher program this summer.
Residents who participate in pesticide training through the Big Island Invasive Species Committee or the Hawaii Ant Lab will be eligible for vouchers.
The training teaches the best uses of pesticides in long-term abatement.
Committee spokeswoman Franny Kinslow Brewer says her group aims to launch a neighborhood plan over the next year.
Democratic Rep. Richard Onishi has proposed two unsuccessful bills targeting invasive little fire ants. He says neighborhoods need to coordinate to keep the ants from shuffling from property to property.
