YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - School buses in Yankton are getting security cameras and a GPS student tracking system.

The Yankton Press and Dakotan reports (https://bit.ly/24KyLNF ) that the cameras from REI Inc. will enable bus drivers to record specific moments on the bus if they can tell something of concern is happening behind them.

Yankton School District business manager Jason Beitz says cameras would be placed inside at the front, middle and back of the buses, though the number of cameras on each bus isn’t yet known. The cameras turn on when the ignition does.

The student tracking system from Synovia Solutions would include a hardware tablet device that at some point will enable students to check in and off the bus, helping school officials keep track of where the students and buses are.
