FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a prison guard shot one inmate to break up an attack by at least three inmates on another prisoner at a maximum security Northern California prison.
Corrections department spokeswoman Terry Thornton says three inmates were armed with homemade weapons in the attack about 10:30 a.m. Monday at California State Prison-Sacramento.
The victim was in fair condition after undergoing surgery for multiple stab wounds.
A guard trying to break up the assault shot one attacker. The inmate who was shot is also in fair condition after surgery at an outside hospital.
The two other attackers were treated at the prison for minor cuts.
Thornton says the motive for the assault is being investigated.
The prison holds nearly 2,400 inmates in Folsom, about 20 miles northeast of Sacramento.
