NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A father has been killed and his son critically injured in a shooting outside of a North Providence convenience store.

The men were shot near Sam’s Food Store at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police say 46-year-old Hernan Avila died from his injuries. His son, 23-year-old Hernan Avila, is in critical condition.

Georgette Avila told WPRI-TV that her husband jumped in front of their son to shield him from the bullets. She says her son had gotten into an argument with a group of men who approached him asking where to buy marijuana.

Police say the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

There was no immediate word on arrests or suspects.

Witnesses reported hearing six gunshots.
