BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A 6-year-old boy in Baton Rouge accidentally shot and wounded his sister after playing with a gun. Authorities are now searching for the owner of the weapon.

Cpl. L’Jean McKneely of the Baton Rouge Police Department says that the incident began Saturday afternoon after the boy shot his sister in the face with a loaded gun in the family’s apartment.

McKneely says say the child’s mother rushed the girl to the hospital, where she underwent successful surgery. It isn’t immediately clear how serious the injuries are.

McKneely says the owner of the weapon fled after the shooting. Detectives are now searching for the gun owner.

Authorities have not made any arrests. The shooting remains under investigation.
