SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri prison inmate serving a life sentence for a southwestern Missouri murder conviction has died at a Springfield hospital.

The Missouri Department of Corrections says 48-year-old John Hayes died of apparent natural causes Saturday.

Hayes began serving his sentence in 1996 for second-degree murder and lately had been confined to the South Central Correctional Center in Licking.
