LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - Some Lawton city councilors say a planned public safety facility doesn’t include enough jail space for prisoners.
The facility is still in its planning stages and won’t be built until 2018, but some officials say the complex could quickly run out of room to house inmates if design changes aren’t made.
The current plan calls for a pod capable of holding 104 prisoners - 34 more than in the existing jail. But The Lawton Constitution reports (https://bit.ly/1TSFXMj ) at least once councilman says the new pod was supposed to hold 150 prisoners, not 104.
City officials have said the jail will be built with pods, allowing potential expansion that could give the jail the ability to house more than 300 prisoners.
