FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) - A Fort Dodge man has been charged with vehicular homicide after authorities say he was speeding, driving drunk and ran a stop sign before fatally hitting a minivan.

The Fort Dodge Messenger (https://bit.ly/1WBBtAa ) reports 45-year-old Leon Shivers is accused of crashing his car into a minivan driven by 82-year-old John McCartney on April 4.

McCartney died from his injuries on April 22 in a hospice.

A criminal complaint says Shivers ran a stop sign, was driving 72 mph on a Fort Dodge road, and his blood alcohol content was over the legal limit to drive. Shivers told investigators he was in the back seat, but witnesses say he was the driver.

Court records don’t list an attorney who could comment for Shivers.
