IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Officials say an Iowa City police officer broke his ankle during a struggle with an Illinois man outside a bar.

Police were called Saturday night to 2 Dogs Pub in Iowa City, where 27-year-old Tommie Clay, of Forest Park, Illinois, was accused of punching another person in the eye.

Police complaints say Clay ran from the bar, and officers later caught him after a foot chase. Police took Clay back to the bar to get witness confirmation, but officials say he began fighting with officers. As he struggled with police, an officer’s ankle broke.

Clay is charged with assault causing injury, interfering with official acts and interfering with official acts resulting in serious injury.

Court records don’t list and attorney who could comment for Clay.
