JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Skeletal remains have been discovered in Jackson.

Jackson Police Department Commander Tyree Jones tells news outlets that the remains were discovered Sunday afternoon in a wooded area by people searching for a lost dog.

Authorities believe the remains could have been out there for months.

Jones says that police have not determined the identity, sex, race or gender of the remains. Jackson police are currently reviewing the missing persons files to determine if they can find a match.

The remains have been transported to the state medical examiner’s office for further investigation.
