CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police say a 13-year-old girl and her mother have been charged with fatally stabbing a 15-year-old girl during a fight outside an apartment complex on the city’s Englewood neighborhood.

Police say the girl was charged Tuesday as a juvenile with first-degree murder in the death of DeKayla Dansberry, a high school freshman. Police say her mother, 35-year-old Tamika Gayden, provided the knife used in the killing and is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor in addition to murder.

It wasn’t immediately known if either have legal representation.

Police say the stabbing occurred during a fight Saturday. Dansberry later died at Stroger Hospital.

DeKayla’s parents say they didn’t know what the fight was about. Her father, Julien Glanton, said he’s sure it was “kids’ stuff” that escalated.
