MIAMI (AP) - Authorities say two New York men are dead from apparent drowning after getting caught in strong currents off a South Florida beach.

Miami-Dade police report in a news release that four friends went swimming Tuesday morning at Haulover Beach. Three of the men were caught in rip currents and became distressed.

The release says an off-duty Bal Harbor police officer and two Miami-Dade Ocean Rescue Lifeguards jumped into the water to render aid. Two of the men, 67-year-old Isack Rosenberg and 66-year-old Chaim Parnes, were transported to Aventura Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The third man was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
