NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - Two men have pleaded guilty in the fatal shooting of a Maryland man who was gunned down on a New Jersey street corner.
Middlesex County prosecutors announced Tuesday that 24-year-old Daniel Gillens pleaded guilty last week to aggravated manslaughter in the April 2013 death of Deonte Shackleford. The 26-year-old Baltimore man was visiting relatives in Carteret when he was killed.
Another defendant, 30-year-old Carteret resident Hakeem Mercer, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.
Prosecutors say Gillens will receive a state prison sentence of up to 25 years, while Mercer will get a 10-year term.
Shackleford was found by police officers who happened to be patrolling in the area and heard the gunshots. He later died at a hospital.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting.
