DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) - Sheriff’s deputies in South Carolina are searching for a man just sentenced on drug charges who ran out of the county courthouse.

Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd told local news outlets that 23-year-old Shanard Keondre King was at the courthouse for a hearing on drug charges Monday afternoon when he ran away.

King had not been in custody before the hearing and ran after he was sentenced to nine years in prison.

The sheriff says a probation agent and a police officer tried to follow him, but King outran them.

The courthouse was temporarily placed on lockdown but deputies determined he wasn’t in the building. Witnesses said they saw King running in an alley near the courthouse.

Byrd said the county has had several discussions about security issues and how outdated the courthouse is.
