DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines police say an officer used appropriate force when he cracked a man’s ribs during a March arrest.

The Des Moines Register (https://dmreg.co/1qs0RdK ) reports Police Chief Dana Wingert made the final decision this week after a review.

Police say officer Cody Grimes kneed 61-year-old Charles Young in the ribs after Young, who was on the floor, refused to put his hands behind his back.

Young called police to remove unwanted guests from his apartment when he allegedly slammed a door on Grimes.

Young claims his hand was trapped under his back and he couldn’t move it due to the pain of Grimes’ blow.

Grimes has remained on active duty.

Young will go to trial in July on charges of assault on an officer and interfering with official acts.
