SPRINGVILLE, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Department of Corrections has identified an inmate who was found dead days ago at the St. Clair Correctional Facility.

Department spokesman Bob Horton said in an emailed statement Tuesday that the inmate has been identified as 54-year-old Emory Cook.

Horton says Cook’s cellmate noticed that he was unresponsive on Friday morning and alerted corrections officers.

The Department of Forensic Sciences in Birmingham is investigating the cause of Cook’s death.

Horton says Cook was serving a life sentence for a 1998 burglary charge in Clarke County and had also been in prison on prior felony convictions.
