MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island woman has pleaded not guilty to charges she suffocated her newborn and stuffed her body in a plastic bag.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1R5MzW8 ) reports that Sharon Seudat appeared in court Monday following her indictment.

Police found the community college student bleeding profusely on March 31. They say she gave birth after hiding her pregnancy from her parents.

Police say she suffocated her newborn daughter inside her home in Glen Head. Investigators found the baby’s lifeless body in a black plastic bag.

Seudat is charged with second-degree murder and first- and second-degree manslaughter. She’s been free on a $1 million bond or $750,000 cash bail. A Nassau County judge has continued her bail.

Defense attorney Edward Lieberman says his client is “deeply remorseful” for what happened.
