NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City man has been sentenced to serve five to 15 years in prison for a 2014 crash that killed a 12-year-old girl.
Brooklyn prosecutors say 28-year-old Robert DeCarlo received the maximum sentence allowable on Monday. He pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault.
DeCarlo admitted in July 2014 that he crashed a stolen minivan into a mother and her two daughters who were walking in Brooklyn. Joie Sellers became pinned under the vehicle and died at the scene. Her mother broke 15 bones. The other daughter was in a coma for weeks.
Prosecutors said DeCarlo was headed to buy heroin at the time.
DeCarlo apologized in court and says he’ll use his time to change.
