DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) - A Randolph man who fatally stabbed a 78-year-old man defending his wife during a home invasion has been convicted of first-degree murder.

A Norfolk Superior Court jury on Monday convicted John Rooney in the February 2010 death of Georgios Kontsas after a nine-week trial and nearly three days of jury deliberations.

Prosecutors say the 52-year-old Rooney forced his way into the Stoughton home, demanding money, attacking Dorothea Kontsas, and stabbing Georgios Kontsas 28 times when he tried to help his wife.

Rooney’s first trial in 2014 ended in a mistrial with a deadlocked jury.

Prosecutors say Rooney knew Georgios Kontsas and heard he had received tens of thousands of dollars in a legal settlement, but left the scene empty-handed.

Sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday.
