THETFORD, Vt. (AP) - Officials say a Vermont resident fatally shot a black bear after he caught the bruin killing chickens inside his chicken coop.

The Valley News reports (https://bit.ly/1WBiSou ) Fish and Wildlife officials say a Thetford resident shot the bear lawfully last week and won’t face criminal charges. Officials say residents are allowed to shoot animals that are killing livestock.

Thetford Animal Control Officer Stu Rogers says the 150-pound bear broke into several chicken coops in town over the past several weeks and killed more than 40 chickens.

Ben Kilham, who studies bear activity, says the 5-year-old bear, Clarkie, was the mother of two cubs and was one of nearly a dozen bears he has been studying.
