OLEAN, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a man suspected in the slaying of a western New York woman who was found dead in her apartment.

Police arrested John Avent over the weekend in the Cattaraugus (kat-uh-RAW’-gus) County city of Olean (OH’-lee-an) in connection with the March homicide of 51-year-old Roberta Rybinski. Avent was arraigned on Sunday.

Rybinsk’s body was found in her apartment in the Erie County town of Tonawanda after her family said they hadn’t heard from her for several days.

Police say a forensic analysis led them to conclude the 49-year-old Avent had killed Rybinski. Few details about the slaying have been released.

Avent is being held without bail in an Erie County jail. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

It wasn’t immediately known if he has a lawyer.
