Park officials on Tuesday said the hiker was found unconscious and unresponsive May 12 when rangers and a U.S. Border Patrol agent arrived after receiving a call for medical assistance. Efforts to revive the man were unsuccessful.

The man was with his wife and parents. The cause of death is unknown. His name wasn’t immediately released.

The incident occurred in the southwest part of the 1,251-square-mile park along the U.S. border with Mexico.
