MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) - An 11-year-old boy who told police he brought a knife to a northern Indiana school to protect himself at the basketball courts near some apartments has been suspended for five days.

The South Bend Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1ToWDza) that the Emmons Elementary School principal in Mishawaka called police after the boy took the folding knife with a 3-inch locking blade out of his backpack and showed it to some friends.

The knife was taken and held as evidence. A police report says the boy was suspended from school for five days and released to his mother.
