MAN CHARGED WITH IMPERSONATING SENATOR TO GET OUT OF LOAN

The U.S. attorney’s office in Tampa reports that a grand jury indicted 67-year-old Sidney Hines this week on five counts of impersonating a federal officer or employee. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

PRISON TERM FOR FLORIDA LAWYER WHO EVADED $1.5 MILLION TAXES

A federal judge imposed the sentence Wednesday on 62-year-old William J. Reilly of Boca Raton. Reilly previously pleaded guilty to a tax evasion charge. Internal Revenue Service officials say Reilly evaded taxes beginning in 1997 and continued until 2007.

NEW SURVEY: WHAT FLORIDA MAN OR WOMAN DESERVES A STATUE?

The Florida Legislature earlier this year agreed to replace the statue of Smith as one of the state’s two contributions to the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall Collection. The Department of State announced Wednesday that it’s going to accept recommendations online and in writing between now and June 10. A panel will submit three finalists to the Legislature ahead of the 2017 session.

LAWSUIT FILED ON BEHALF OF IMMIGRANT PARENTS IN FLORIDA

The Southern Poverty Law Center has filed a lawsuit against the Collier County School District on behalf of immigrant parents, who say their children were placed into an adult English program that offered no opportunity to earn credit toward a high school diploma. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in federal court.

DR. CELESTE PHILIP NO LONGER INTERIM FLORIDA SURGEON GENERAL

Gov. Rick Scott made Philip’s appointment permanent on Wednesday. Philip replaced Dr. John Armstrong, who resigned after not being confirmed for a second term by the Florida Senate.
