DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Clive man has been convicted of murder in the 2014 death of his girlfriend’s toddler.

The Des Moines Register (https://dmreg.co/1rTL7Si ) reports a Polk County jury on Wednesday found 26-year-old Joe Anthony Lopez guilty of first-degree murder and child endangerment causing death.

Police say 20-month old Ruby Alvarez was taken to a hospital on Nov. 29, 2014, with broken ribs and bleeding on the brain. She died four days later.

Prosecutors argued Lopez squeezed and slammed the toddler into the concrete floor of a Clive apartment. Lopez told police the toddler fell from a high chair while he was in the bathroom. But prosecutors argued the child’s injuries were inconsistent with a fall.

A judge previously declared a mistrial in the case.
