EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Lucy Vinis has won the Eugene mayoral race.

The Register-Guard newspaper reports (https://is.gd/Ge0JFR ) she led the other three candidates by a wide margin and exceeded the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff in November.

She will replace Mayor Kitty Piercy, who endorsed Vinis after deciding not to seek a fourth term.

The first open mayoral race in 12 years was a referendum on the direction of Eugene’s political leadership.

Vinis argued her progressive values align with the majority of Eugene residents and those of Piercy.

Eugene is Oregon’s second-largest city, just ahead of Salem.
