WEST COVINA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a person on Interstate 10 in eastern Los Angeles County.

The California Highway Patrol says the body was discovered in eastbound lanes around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday near West Covina. The victim’s gender and age were not immediately available.

Investigators don’t know why the person was walking on the freeway.

Commuter traffic backed up for miles after officials closed all but one eastbound lane during the investigation.

The CHP alerted law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for a vehicle with serious front end damage.
