PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a police pursuit ended when a vehicle hit an officer in a cemetery and he fired a single shot at the driver.

Middlesex County prosecutors say the chase began around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday when the driver ran a red light in New Brunswick.

A Rutgers University police officer tried to stop the vehicle but soon ended the pursuit. Piscataway police spotted the vehicle a short time later and tried to stop it.

The driver eventually turned into the Resurrection Cemetery. Authorities say he circled several headstones near a funeral service before the vehicle became mired in the soil.

No one was struck by the shot the officer fired. The officer and the driver were both treated at hospitals for undisclosed injuries.

The driver’s name was not released because he has not yet been charged.
