JENNINGS, La. (AP) - The Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury has awarded a $9.4 million contract to a construction company for a new jail just west of Jennings.

The Lake Charles American Press reports (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb ) M.D. Descant Construction of Bunkie received the bid to build the 200-bed regional consolidated jail facility.

Descant submitted the lowest of six bids taken under advisement by police jurors in March.

Project engineer Chuck Stutes of Meyer and Associates said it’ll take about 10 days to review and sign the contracts and file all the documents.

Architect Mark LaLande says construction, which is expected to begin June 20, will take 18 months to complete.

Plans for the jail include a 31,000-square-foot enclosed facility with concrete parking, drainage, security and utility work on a 17.5 acre-site just off U.S. 90.
