SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A known sex offender is facing new sexual assault charges in Marion County in connection with the rape of someone who was physically or mentally incapacitated and unable to consent to sex.

The Statesman Journal reports (https://stjr.nl/24YZ7Z9 ) that Edward Christopher Ritter, of Salem, was arraigned Monday on charges of rape and sexual assault. He was also charged with a drug offense and is being held on $500,000 bail.

Ritter is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with the victim in April. Police say he used drugs on victims to enable the assaults and that he may have more victims, who have not yet come forward.

Ritter was convicted in 1989 of second-degree sex abuse and in 1997 and 2011 for failing to register as a sex offender.
