AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Gov. Greg Abbott has set a special election runoff for Aug. 2 to fill the vacant, San Antonio-based Texas House seat of state Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon.
None of the four candidates vying to replace McClendon captured a majority during a special election in May, requiring a second round of voting.
McClendon’s House District 120 encompasses east San Antonio. Her term expires in January, when the Legislature next reconvenes.
November’s separate, general election will determine McClendon’s successor - so the special election winner will only serve her remaining term until January.
McClendon, a veteran Democrat, announced in September that she was retiring, and submitted a resignation letter to Abbott four months later.
Early voting for the runoff will be held from July 25-29.
