ETHAN, S.D. (AP) - Work is set to begin on a $40,000 veterans memorial in the town of Ethan that was designed by a high school student.

Ethan American Legion members tell The Daily Republic newspaper (https://bit.ly/1Tfj5g9 ) that they had talked about building a memorial for years but hadn’t found a favorable design until they saw one dreamed up by sophomore Tristen Scott.

Commander Vilas Kurtenbach says construction will get underway within a week, even though the Legion hasn’t raised all of the necessary money yet. A dedication date hasn’t been scheduled.

About 330 people live in Ethan, south of Mitchell.
