WANTAGE, N.J. (AP) - An emergency signal aided in the search for a small plane that had crashed in a wooded area in New Jersey, killing the pilot.

The Civil Air Patrol located the wreckage of the single-engine plane off Unionville Road in Wantage on Thursday.

Civil Air Patrol Maj. Bill Martin says the sole occupant, the pilot, was dead. Martin says the plane was upside down and its wings were torn off. He says it appears the aircraft hit a tree line while trying to land in the field.

The search for the plane began Tuesday when the emergency signal was received.

The name of the pilot has not been released.
