LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a vehicle hit two construction workers on Interstate 95 in Lumberton, killing one and sending the other to a hospital with serious injuries.

Lumberton Police Capt. Terry Parker tells local media the accident happened in the northbound lanes of I-95 about 5 a.m. Friday. It happened near the U.S. 74 exit about 16 miles north of the South Carolina state line.

Parker says the workers were hit while paving operations were winding down for the night.

The name of the dead worker has not been released pending notification of relatives. The driver was not hurt. The driver’s name has not been released.

Parker says the workers were employed by the Stay Alert Safety Security Workers company which provides workers for construction projects.
