MIAMI (AP) - Authorities say a Florida police detective has fatally shot a man during a confrontation.

The Miami Herald (https://goo.gl/ghKzyw) reports that the shooting occurred Thursday afternoon.

Miami-Dade police report that the officer was not injured, but 22-year-old Kentrill William Carraway died after being rushed to the hospital.

Detective Marjorie Eloi tells the Herald that gang unit detectives were in the area on a narcotics investigation. She says they approached Carraway and some friends, and he grabbed a gun from his waistband. Eloi says Detective George Eugene then shot Carraway.

Police did not report Eugene’s race. Carraway was black.

The Herald reports that Carraway had pleaded guilty to armed robbery in 2014 and was fined for misdemeanor theft in 2012.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates all police shootings.
