UDINE, Italy (AP) - Udinese has appointed former Palermo coach Giuseppe Iachini to lead the team after deciding not to renew Luigi De Canio’s contract.

Iachini was fired twice by Palermo this season but has guided Chievo Verona, Brescia and Sampdoria to Serie A promotions.

Udinese finished 17th this season, only one point above the relegation zone, for its worst result since being promoted from the second division in 1995.

In 2011, 2012 and 2013, Udinese finished fourth, third and fifth, respectively, and was considered the best of Italy’s provincial clubs.

De Canio, who coached Queens Park Rangers in 2007-08, was hired in March to replace Stefano Colantuono.

Udinese says Iachini signed a two-year contract. He’ll have to reform the squad with standout forward Antonio Di Natale leaving.
