TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - The Terre Haute parks board has reversed an earlier decision that would have meant the community would go without an operating, municipally owned pool.

The board on Wednesday voted 4-0 to reopen the Deming Park pool in the summer following needed repairs, the (Terre Haute) Tribune-Star (https://bit.ly/1TqmcQq ) reported. The board had voted last month to close the pool due to falling revenues, declining attendance, and needs with upkeep.

Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett at the Wednesday meeting announced $25,000 in donations or pledges, with help with materials and labor offered by businesses.

Vigo County Commissioner Jon Marvel announced at the meeting that $30,000 would be donated by the county for the pool. That would need action by the County Council, but Marvel said that the support is there.

“Because there are no other pools in the area or any place close, we decided we’d step up and give the city up to $30,000,” he said.

Bennett said after the meeting that the board initially voted to close the pool because the parks department didn’t have enough money in its operating budget to cover the needed repairs. But the decision to close the pool was followed by an outpouring of concern, interest and donations.

“Through contributions, both financially and with local businesses wanting to provide some labor and materials, we can make this happen and not have to do anything with the parks budget (to fund the repairs). It’s a win-win for everybody. The pool will be open, and the parks budget will remain intact,” Bennett said.

Billy Hubbard, parks department director of safety and operations, said the pool needs about $34,000 in repairs, including work to pool’s water treatment building and new lifeguard platforms and diving boards.
