YUMA, Ariz. (AP) - A Yuma woman has been sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison in connection to the death of her 3-year-old grandson, who accidentally shot himself with her handgun.

The Yuma Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1XCvR8f ) that Rachel Spry was sentenced Friday for negligent homicide she was also sentenced to serve 2 ½ years for misconduct involving weapons. She will be credited 318 days for time she has already spent in custody but the two terms will run consecutively, meaning she will serve a total of five years in prison.

According to court documents, Spry had been staying at her daughter’s house in May 2013 when 3-year-old Darrien Nez pulled her backpack off a dryer, causing a handgun inside to go off, shooting the boy in the face. He died of his injuries.
