BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - A woman was killed and her granddaughter suffered serious injuries after their vehicle struck a fire hydrant in Brockton and flipped twice.

Police tell The Enterprise (https://bit.ly/1QNDyRr ) that 68-year-old Mercedes Dorval was taken to the hospital after the crash at about 2 p.m. Sunday where she was pronounced dead.

The driver, her granddaughter, 21-year-old Johanna Bernard, was taken to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries.

Police say the car was southbound on West Street when it swerved across the road and struck a fire hydrant on the east side the road before flipping twice and coming to a rest in the front yard of a home.

The crash remains under investigation.
