SAYREVILLE, N.J. (AP) - Authorities have charged an accused hit-and-run driver who allegedly struck and injured two young brothers as they walked to school in Sayreville.

Middlesex County prosecutors say Margaret Cheheli faces two counts of aggravated assault and single counts of tampering with evidence, endangering an injured victim by fleeing and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving serious injury.

Bail was set at $100,000 for the 36-year-old Sayreville resident. It wasn’t known if she’s retained an attorney.

The boys, ages 5 and 8, were hit in a crosswalk at Our Lady of Victories School around 7:45 a.m. Monday. The older boy was treated at a hospital and later released, but his brother remains hospitalized.

Cheheli was apprehended a short time later. Authorities say she abandoned her vehicle and tossed away the keys.
