GALIVANTS FERRY, S.C. (AP) - Democrats are gathering along the banks of the Little Pee Dee River for a political tradition that’s more than a century old.

The biennial Galivants Ferry Stump is taking place Monday afternoon at the Galivants Ferry General Store. Party organizers say the event features music, food and activities and features stump speeches from candidates for U.S. Senate, South Carolina’s congressional districts and local offices in Horry County.

State Party Chairman Jaime Harrison says U.S. Reps. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and Joseph Crowley of New York will be kicking off the event.

The first Galivants Ferry Stump happened in 1876, with General Wade Hampton arriving on horseback to stump for his historic gubernatorial campaign. Organizers say it’s the oldest political stump speaking event in the United States.
