PHOENIX (AP) - An attorney for a man who was arrested for last summer’s freeway shootings has filed a motion asking that his property be returned to him.
ABC15 (KNXV-TV) reports (https://bit.ly/1VH3beM ) that now that Leslie Merritt Jr. has been released from jail and the charges against him have been dismissed he is asking for the return of his personal belongings, including his seized gun and vehicle.
The shootings caused panic on Phoenix-area freeways, where 11 vehicles were hit in August and September of 2015.
According to a motion filed Friday by Merritt’s attorneys, law enforcement found no gunshot residue in the vehicle and the handgun couldn’t be conclusively linked to bullets recovered from the crime scenes. As such, attorneys argue the state has no basis to keep Merritt’s property.
