DILLON, Mont. (AP) - Montana Western has named athletic trainer Russ Richardson as its athletic director.

Chancellor Beth Weatherby announced the hiring Monday. She says Richardson brings a wealth of experience and proven leadership skills to the job.

Richardson says he’s excited to help build on the success of the school’s athletic programs and provide opportunities and resources for its student-athletes to be part of championship caliber teams. He begins his new duties on May 16.

Richardson graduated from then Western Montana College in 1982, earned a master’s degree from California State and a doctorate from Washington State. He has been western’s head athletic trainer and associate professor since 2012.

Richardson takes over for Ryan Nourse, who will return to coaching Western’s football team. Nourse coached the Bulldogs in 2011 and 2012 before being named athletic director in July 2013.
