ISLAND PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Police say two men have been rescued after the car they were in went into a Long Island waterway.

Nassau police say the car was traveling in Island Park Saturday night when it left the roadway, hit shrubbery and went through a fence between two houses before going into the Broad Channel waterway.

Police say the 24-year-old driver was sitting on top of the partially submerged car when first responders arrived. A 28-year-old passenger was trapped inside with multiple leg fractures. Police used a 20-foot ladder to reach the men.

Neither man was immediately identified.

Police say the driver was hospitalized after sustaining abrasions. The passenger was airlifted to a hospital.

Detectives say they don’t believe criminality was involved.

The vehicle remained in the water Sunday evening.
