HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The wife of Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman is urging Connecticut lawmakers to oppose Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s proposed changes to the state’s bail bonds system.
Reality television star Beth Chapman appeared at the state Capitol on Monday with local bail agents. Chapman is president of the Professional Bail Agents of the United States.
Malloy’s bill would prohibit courts from requiring defendants to post surety bonds if they’re charged with a misdemeanor.
Chapman says the legislation would hurt business for bail agents, reduce accountability for defendants and put the public’s safety at risk.
Malloy, a Democrat, has said hundreds of defendants who can’t afford to pay bail and are waiting in jails for their court trial, at the state’s expense.
The bill awaits Senate action.
