WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A jury has been seated in a lawsuit involving the town of Mocksville and three police officers who say they were unjustly fired.
The jury of seven women and one man was seated Monday in Winston-Salem after three hours of questioning by U. S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder. Opening arguments were expected after lunch.
The three officers contend in their lawsuit that they were wrongfully fired in 2011 for exercising free speech. They say they were fired because they called the governor’s office to share their concerns about corruption in the department. They sued in 2012 and want at least $100,000 each in damages and their jobs back.
The town’s former police chief and town manager deny the allegations. The town said they were fired for misconduct.
