CHELMSFORD, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts State Police say a 71-year-old woman and a Chelmsford officer were injured after the woman slammed into the back of a police cruiser parked along Interstate 495.

Chief James Spinney says Chelmsford police received a report around 8:30 p.m. Sunday that the woman rear-ended the cruiser near exit 37 of I-495 northbound. The officer had been working a detail at a construction site along the highway.

Trooper Dustin Fitch says the woman and the officer both suffered minor injuries and were taken to Lowell General Hospital as a precaution. They were not identified.

The police cruiser and the woman’s Chevrolet Trax sport utility vehicle each suffered extensive damage in the crash.

Chelmsford police and state police are continuing to investigate. No charges were immediately filed.
