MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia University’s basketball arena has reopened three days after asbestos was detected in materials that were exposed during construction activities.
WVU Environmental Health and Safety officials announced the reopening of the WVU Coliseum on Monday after lab tests of air samples met regulatory standards for occupancy. Samples taken earlier from the seating area and event level met similar standards.
Tests of the material found Friday confirmed the presence of asbestos above ceilings in restroom entrances that surround the concourse.
The 46-year-old Coliseum is undergoing a $15 million renovation. The building was closed in 1999-2000 while asbestos abatement was performed in exposed areas, including the 14,000-seat arena.
The university says in a news release that commencement exercises planned at the Coliseum May 13 through 15 will go on as scheduled.
