WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Work is underway on a new walkway that will encircle the USS North Carolina in Wilmington, giving visitors a 360-degree view of the battleship.

Local media outlets report that Gov. Pat McCrory was on hand Thursday for a ceremony marking the start of work on the more than $10 million project.

The 2,000-foot walkway will sit above a steel cofferdam to be built where the battleship is berthed.

McCrory said the World War II battleship is a celebrated memorial for veterans.

He says the new walkway will add to the battleship’s status as one of the top tourist attractions in the state.
