SAN DIEGO (AP) - The Mexican consulate in San Diego is condemning the alleged beating of one of its employees on a public bus.

Hew Turner has pleaded not guilty to battery as a hate crime.

Mexican Consul General Remedios Gomez says the employee was speaking on his phone in Spanish Sunday when the 37-year-old white suspect told him he would beat him up. The suspect allegedly called the victim a Mexican and used a profanity.

The employee, whose name wasn’t released, escaped serious injury but the consulate says he bled and missed three days of work.

The consulate said Friday that Mexico condemns such acts of violence.

Turner is being held on $55,000 bail after his arrest by National City police. His attorney Ryan Maguire-Fong declined comment.
